How we make money

We may earn money from affiliate links, sponsored listings and ads. Each is labeled where you see it, and none of them changes a Coverage Score, a ranking order, a pick or a comparison verdict.

How we may earn money

  • Affiliate links. If you follow a link marked as an affiliate link and later buy, the vendor or its affiliate network may pay us a commission. It costs you nothing extra.
  • Sponsored listings. A vendor may pay to have a card shown in a labeled placement. See the rules below and on our advertise page.
  • Display ads. We may show ads served by an ad network. They are labeled "Advertisement" and kept apart from our recommendations.

Our commitments

We follow the US Federal Trade Commission's Endorsement Guides (16 CFR Part 255). A clear disclosure sits near every group of affiliate links: "Some links are affiliate links; we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you." Affiliate and sponsored links carry rel="sponsored nofollow noopener". This page is linked from the footer of every page.

Scores and rankings

The Coverage Score is computed in code from sourced facts, and the function that computes it never receives the sponsorship, affiliate or ownership fields. A build check confirms this. Category pages sort by score, not by who pays. We reject any affiliate program that requires favorable placement. Read the full formula in the methodology.

  • A sponsored card is visibly labeled "Sponsored" and sits in its own box after the quick picks on a category page, or in the sidebar or after the list on a guide. It never sits inside a ranked list.
  • It has no effect on any Coverage Score, ranking order, pick or comparison verdict.
  • A sponsor's facts follow the same sourcing rules as everyone else's.
  • We can decline any sponsor, and a sponsor can be a tool we already list or one that meets our free listing criteria.
  • Sponsored cards never appear on the tool pages of a sponsor's competitors, on comparison pages or on legal pages.

Ad rules

Ads are boxed, labeled "Advertisement" and have reserved space so the page does not jump. They are never placed above the first answer or table, never next to an affiliate button, a sponsored card or the navigation, and are not shown on the home, comparison, framework, legal or search pages. Ads load only if you accept advertising; see your privacy choices.

Commercial relationships on tool pages

Each tool page states whether we have a commercial relationship with the vendor. When we have none, it says "We have no commercial relationship with" the vendor. That sentence is computed from our data, so it is true by construction.
