AI security posture management & discovery: 10 tools compared

AI security posture management (AI-SPM) tools inventory the AI models, services and data in your clouds and flag risky configuration. An AI endpoint nobody listed can stay exposed with weak authentication because nobody owns it. Most sit inside a cloud or data security platform, so coverage depends on the clouds and services you run.

Executive summary

What it is
AI security posture management (AI-SPM) tools discover AI models, services, agents and data across your cloud accounts, build an inventory and flag risky settings such as exposed endpoints and weak authentication.
The risk
An AI service nobody listed has no owner and no review. It can stay reachable from the internet with weak authentication, or expose the data used to ground or fine-tune it.
What to buy or do
Check first whether your existing cloud security platform offers an AI posture add-on that covers your AI services. Buy a separate tool only for the gaps, and route every finding to a named owner.

OWASP LLM risks we weigh in this category

Risk coverage is 25 of 100 Coverage Score points. A tool earns them only for risks mapped to a capability the sources document.

How to choose

AI-SPM tells you which AI you run and whether each piece is set up safely. Most products sit inside a cloud or data security platform, so start from the clouds, AI services and data stores you use, not from the longest feature list.

Setup

  • Match platform coverage. Microsoft's AI-SPM documentation, for example, lists discovery for Azure OpenAI Service, Azure AI Foundry, Azure Machine Learning, Amazon Bedrock and Google Vertex AI. Each vendor lists its own.
  • Check discovery depth. Some tools build an inventory of models, data and application components (an AI bill of materials); others only flag configuration issues.
  • Check which plan holds which feature. The same Microsoft page says that from July 1, 2026, agent-level discovery for Microsoft Foundry and third-party cloud agents needs a Microsoft Agent 365 license instead of the Defender CSPM plan. Ask each vendor the same question.
  • Choose the risks. We weigh LLM02, LLM03, LLM06 and LLM08 in this category.

Integration

  • If you already run a CSPM or DSPM product, check whether its AI add-on covers what you need before you buy a second tool.
  • Look for attack path analysis that links an exposed endpoint to the identity and data behind it. Isolated findings are harder to rank.
  • Finding employee use of public AI apps is a separate job from cloud posture (see shadow AI), and blocking sensitive data sent to them belongs to the data protection layer.
  • The inventory should feed the AI register kept in the governance and risk layer.

Limits

Posture tools read configuration and metadata. They do not test whether a model can be tricked into misbehaving, so pair them with red teaming tools and runtime guardrails. Check the pricing model on each tool page, and see how the Coverage Score works before you compare platforms.

AI-SPM FAQ

What is AI-SPM?

AI security posture management finds the AI models, services and data in your environments and checks them for risky settings such as exposed endpoints or weak authentication. Microsoft describes its version as discovering a generative AI bill of materials and using attack path analysis.

How is AI-SPM different from CSPM and DSPM?

CSPM tracks the security state of cloud assets, DSPM finds sensitive data and how exposed it is, and AI-SPM focuses on AI workloads and their components. They overlap and are often sold together: Microsoft, for example, delivers its AI-SPM features inside the Defender CSPM plan.

Does AI-SPM find shadow AI?

Some tools discover AI services in the cloud accounts you connect. Finding employee use of public AI apps usually needs a network or browser control. Check each tool's documented discovery scope.

Does AI-SPM replace runtime protection?

No. Posture tools look at configuration and inventory. Runtime guardrails inspect prompts and responses as they happen, and red teaming tools probe behavior. They are different layers.

Which OWASP risks do AI-SPM tools cover?

In our scoring they are weighed on LLM02, LLM03, LLM06 and LLM08. A tool earns credit only for risks that map to a capability its sources document. The mapping is our analysis.
